There have been very few shows which have been able to hold their own like Family Guy against a wave of controversies that has been hurled towards them ever since the show's inception.

An animated take on the modern American family of today, the lead character of the show features Peter Griffin- a fat, lazy, unintuitive husband with an average job who goes more by the heart than his head. Presented in stark contrast is his wife Lois- the attractive, logically thinking wife representing the fantasy of all American males. They have two kids Chris and Meg who different two shades of teenage cravings and the talking dog Brian is the source of illuminating wisdom in the house full of madcap mishaps.

However, the star laurels of Family Guy rest on one and one person alone. Stewie Griffin plays an one year old homoerotic baby who dreams of world domination and plans to kill his mother. His dialogues are laced with layered intelligence and sarcastic humor at its pinnacle making him come in direct comparison to other legendary animated kids like Bart and Lisa from the Simpsons and Eric Cartman from the equally controversial South Park.

What sets the show apart is its approach to modern day life that dabbles in between scathing social commentary and unrelated pop culture gags culminating in a laugh riot parodying modern sensibilities. It night lack character depth like the Simpsons or the intellectual wit of South Park, but has a loyal fan following of its own making it the only TV show to come back after being canceled by FOX.

Seth MacFarlane, the creator of the show has often come under a line of fire for a number of issues. Peter Griffin has been labeled as a Homer Simpson clone by most Simpson loyalists while several have complained about the irrelevant nature of cut away pop culture shots without any context to the plot.

The biggest issue however lies in the Family Guy vs. Sarah Palin debate that takes the effect of such shows on modern society on a much deeper context. Sarah Palin, the former Governor of Alaska and 2008 vice presidential candidate took on the writers of Family Guy by calling them "heartless jerks" for their portrayal of a girl with Down Syndrome in one of the episodes.

The controversial episode shows Chris wooing a girl called Ellen with the syndrome who replies during a dinner date that her father is an accountant and her mother is the former governor of Alaska, a subtle jab towards Palin herself whose youngest son Trig has Downs Syndrome.

The Family Guy vs. Sarah Palin controversy sparked a huge debate on the portrayal of disability on television and the limit of the "offend everyone" principles such shows are aimed at. Seth MacFarlane commented saying he was proud of the character Ellen who was headstrong and dynamic despite the Syndrome and Andrea Fay Friedman, the women with Down syndrome who voiced the character said she did not find it an insult to have the disease unlike Palin who carried Trig around for sympathy and votes.

Family Guy Stewie

Stewart Gilligan Griffin (a.k.a. Stewie) is a fictional one year old character in the animated series called Family Guy. He is very sophisticated and has an advanced vocabulary.

He is completely obsessed with world domination and also trying throughout the episodes to kill his mother, Lois because of the nine months he had to spend in her which he calls the "ovarian Bastille." Stewie has a brother named Chris and a sister named Meg, but also a half-brother which the Griffin family is unaware of named Bertram.

The voice of Stewie is done by Seth McFarlane in an English accent. It never seems awkward at all to the people in the show when Stewie seems to have firearms and and other such weapons. He even constructed secret passages in his bedroom that house all of his weapons as well as he built fighter-jets, robots, mind control devices, a time machine and such.

What is funny to me is that it is hard to tell if the family actually hears Stewie talking because at some points they respond back to him and then at some times, when he talks about world domination or killing Lois, no one says anything back to him.

For example in an episode called "Mind Over Murder" Stewie says "victory is mine!" and then his mother Lois responds back with "Yes, and this cake is yours too." So obviously their are three ways you can look at it, either they ignore him, don't hear him, or don't take him seriously. In an episode called "Mr.

Griffin Goes to Washington" Lois says, "My god, it all makes sense now. My baby is some kind of diabolical genius bent on world domination!" Stewie then replies back (clapping) Bravo, Lois. The last horse finally crosses the finish line. Which Louis then replies back with, "Stewie! All these months I should have paid attention to what you've said.

You're an evil child. Why, why did I have to go and smoke pot when I was pregnant with you?" Being that Stewie is supposed to only be one years old and does not seem to age throughout the seasons he talks about things from way before his time as if he were there. He is such a sophisticated child, while on the other hand he loves child things. Rupert, which is his teddy bear is like a best friend to Stewie; Stewie talks to him as if he were a real person.

In days gone by when one spoke of television animation, one immediately thought of a certain duck by the name of Donald, or a mouse by the name of Mickey, or perhaps even a duck named Daffy or a mouse names Jerry, but these days the genre of television animation has adopted a whole new persona.

The era of Disney and Hanna-Barbera has given way to a new generation of comedic, angst-driven animated sitcoms, the content of which is sometimes more suited to viewing in the bedroom than the playroom. The last two decades have seen the emergence of such animated shows as The Simpsons, South Park, Futurama and Family Guy, which are aimed squarely at an adult audience.

The humour invariably revolves around the politically-incorrect musings of some of the characters of these programmes, and it seems that the more politically-incorrect the musings, the greater the popularity of the respective programme. Perhaps the relatively anonymous nature of animation, as opposed to a show with real actors, lends itself to an approach which requires fewer boundaries.

Family Guy is a perfect example of this new model of television animation. Family Guy was created by Seth MacFarlane for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The show has won three Primetime Emmy Awards, three Annie Awards, and one Golden Reel Award.

It first graced our tv screens in 1999 and has now completed its eighth season. Family Guy is set in a fictional town called Quahog, Rhode Island. It tells the story of a superficially normal family that not far beneath the surface is morbidly dysfunctional.

The family consists of Peter and Lois Griffin and their three children, Chris, Meg, and baby Stewie, and the family dog, Brian. Chris matches his father with respect to his intelligence (or lack thereof) and obesity level, Meg is on a never-ending and never-succeeding quest for popularity amongst her peers, and baby Stewie is an evil genius who lusts for power and works tirelessly towards the destruction of his naïve mother, Lois.

The family dog, Brian, apart from possessing the remarkable ability (for a canine) to talk, sips martinis and attempts to deal with life issues, of which there are plenty in the Family Guy scenario. His intelligence presents a stark contrast to that of most members of the family.

It seems that sometimes the raison-d'etre of programmes such as Family Guy (apart from making oodles of money) is to court controversy, and how better to do that than to offend people. The producers of Family Guy certainly did that when they depicted a young woman with Down Syndrome, who was supposedly the daughter of a former female Governor of Alaska.

The real former Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, is the mother of a young child with Down Syndrome and was justifiably offended by the depiction. Of course this publicity did the programme's ratings no harm, and unfortunately the behaviour of the makers of the show is rewarded.

Family Guy :

Family Guy ?

When Family Guy originally premiered back in 2000, my initial feelings towards the animated show were that of extreme adoration. I was an immature high schooler who soon began spreading the word about this new "Simpsons-esque" cartoon that was somehow falling through the cracks. After the show was cancelled, I was one of the millions of people who purchased the first two DVD volumes, which ultimately lead to Fox resurrecting the show.

I had both a Peter Griffin t-shirt as well as a Stewie one, and I wore them with pride. At parties, my friends and I would play "Drink the Beer" where if we drank our beer, we won...another beer! So when Family Guy premiered on Fox again in 2005 after that initial cancellation, I was happier then Quagmire in a Vietnamese brothel.

But ever since then, I slowly began to drift away from Family Guy. Episode after episode, the writing began to suffer and the show lost more and more structure. Once a perfect blend of outrageous humor, offensive material and vulgarity, Family Guy now seemed to be more focused on being absurd then being funny. I grew tired of the epic battles between Peter and the Chicken or the musical numbers by the child-molesting elderly neighbor, Herbert. And I really learned to loath the out-of-nowhere live-action Conway Twitty performances. (Seriously, does any Family Guy fan find them funny? I'd like to know.)

Which brings us to 2009, where my opinion on Family Guy can best be described by that of Lois Griffin's opinion on her husband. She loves him and always will even though his stupidity can get so overbearing that she feels like she's wasting her time. Sure, she can do better and sometimes wishes she did. But in the end, the good times outnumber the bad times, which results in her decision to faithfully stand by his side.

And that is precisely how I feel about the recently released Family Guy: Volume Seven. Some of it's good, some of it's bad, but when it's all said and done, you'll laugh more than you'll sigh despite these episodes being a far cry from the classic Family Guy that I fell in love with.

Of Volume Seven's thirteen episodes, not too many of them stand out as great television. Because of the show's structure, you can only really hope for funny moments and dialogue to pop up sporadically throughout each episode. The infamous cutaway gags/flashbacks that Family Guy is so well known for are also pretty hit-or-miss. Ones like the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion getting pissed at Dorothy because she admitted she was going to miss the Scarecrow most of all right in front of them are hysterical. But then you get ones like the Shouting-Arab Gram Business that completely fall flat.

A huge perk of purchasing this DVD rather than just watching the individual episodes on television is the profanity that gets sprinkled in each of the episodes by the creators. I have to admit, it's pretty hilarious hearing each member of the cast drop an F-bomb at least once, especially Stewie. Other special features that are included on the DVDs are deleted scenes and commentaries by the show's creators.

A featurette entitled "Family Guy Cribz" got my hopes up that they would parody the MTV show Cribs by having some of the show's most popular characters take us on a tour of their house (How funny could Quagmire's have been?). Instead, I got a real documentary on Family Guy's production offices in Los Angeles and the people that work there, which only left me wishing I worked for Family Guy. Finally, Volume Seven comes with a sneak peak of Fox's new spin-off series The Cleveland Show where Stewie takes the words right out of my mouth. "What the hell? He's getting his own show?"

Regardless of Family Guy's slow decline in quality, I still find myself laughing out loud at these newer episodes. The characters are still enjoyable to watch and I will always be fond of the show's immature nature. Family Guy: Volume Seven is not a waste of time by any means, I just hope that by the time Volume Eight comes around, we see a Family Guy that doesn't have to spend an entire episode of Peter singing The Trashmen's "Surfin' Bird" just to squeeze a laugh out of us.
